This course is a survey of Arabic culture from the sixth century to the present. It focuses on Islamic civilization and culture of the people of the Middle East and North Africa. It starts with a discussion of culture and the elements it constitutes. It then provides an overview of the geopolitical aspects of the Arab world. The focus then shifts to cultural components such as religion, science, family values, women rights, and arts in the Arab world and how they compare to the students’ native culture. The discussion of these topics is always framed within the definition of culture proposed at the beginning of the course.
